At the North Devon Council annual council meeting on Thursday, 18 May, Liberal Democrat Councillor Ian Roome was elected as the new Leader of the Council. Councillor David Worden (Lib Dem) was elected as Deputy Leader after serving as leader since 2019.
The Liberal Democrats have won the majority seats on North Devon Council’s 2023 election. The party is thrilled to have received such tremendous support from the residents of North Devon.
In the middle of COVID, Green Lane’s owners announced that they were getting rid of the town centre shopping centre.

Liberal Democrats on the District and Town councils are serious about tackling crime in the town centre. “Crime and antisocial behaviour have become a problem in Barnstaple” said Lib Dem spokesperson Syed Jusef.
Over the last four years, Lib Dem run North Devon Council has spearheaded a huge investment in our town centre. The council has teamed up with business, the police and government to try to turn round the town centre.
Mental health influences our quality of life, and in North Devon we have some of the most vulnerable communities in the county. The rural nature of our area makes it is easy to feel isolated, especially for those already coping with mental illness.

Lib Dem run North Devon Council have been helping to get secure homes for local families. “We have been using the council’s powers to bring long term empty houses back into use as family homes” said Councillor David Worden.
Councillor Louisa York opened the first repair café in Barnstaple at St John’s Community Centre.
Conservative Devon County Council are planning even more cuts to care services in North Devon. The plans, released last week, will increase the risk of homelessness, close the Mental Health Link Centres, and cut Devon Carers support for hard pressed families.
Cllr Ian Roome, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate for North Devon, is demanding the Government cancel plans to hike the average household energy bill by nearly £500 in April, and bring in a tax on the “bonanza bonuses” of oil and gas bosses.
