North Devon’s MP Raises Alarm Over Pharmacy Cover

North Devon MP Ian Roome has written to the CEO of Jhoots Pharmacies, Manjit Jhooty, following a series of unexpected closures at local pharmacies, and is asking for the support of local residents.
Ian Roome MP has raised serious concerns over repeated closures at local Jhoots Pharmacies, warning that patients are being left without reliable access to essential medication.
Jhoots Pharmacy, a national chain based in the West Midlands with branches across the UK, operates several pharmacies in North Devon across Barnstaple, Braunton, Ilfracombe and Combe Martin. Yet, across North Devon their pharmacies are facing temporary closures, medication shortages, and reduced access for patients.

Liberal Democrat MP for North Devon, Ian Roome, said:
“In recent weeks I've been contacted by a number of concerned constituents who've either experienced unexpected closures, or found their usual medications unavailable, at their local branch of Jhoots pharmacy”
"Customers will be frustrated not to be able to collect routine prescriptions, and if medications are not delivered, frontline staff will be frustrated not to be able to help.
“I've asked to meet with Jhoots senior management urgently, to get some reassurance that these supply chain and staffing issues will be worked out. This is an essential service."
Mr Roome added: "Across many coastal areas like North Devon, pharmacy cover is limited, and transport makes accessing an alternative difficult for many."
Liberal Democrat County Councillor for Braunton Rural, Graham Bell, added: "Rural pharmacies are an essential frontline health service. As a nurse, I see first-hand how important pharmacists are in dealing with short term and long-term conditions. They are often the first point of contact for advice, urgent medication, and ongoing care."
“Our local pharmacy team in Braunton has provided medicines and support for over 10,000 people! Pharmacy technicians and pharmacists are doing extraordinary work under pressure, covering wide rural areas with minimal support.”
A report into pressures on community pharmacies by Community Pharmacy England, published in August, suggests that 32% of pharmacies expect to reduce opening hours, and 59% expect staff cuts in the next year.
Jhoots acquired 36 branches of Lloyds Pharmacy in November 2023, in a deal reportedly supported by £17.4 million in funding from HSBC UK.
