Local family man and charity fundraiser selected for Liberal Democrats in North Devon

Cllr Ian Roome, who represents Barnstaple North on Devon County Council, has been selected to fight the next general election for the Liberal Democrats in North Devon, winning a members vote.  The constituency is expected to be won by the party at the next election, with the current Conservative Member of Parliament set to lose her seat.

  • Ian Roome moved to North Devon in 1989 for his posting at RAF Chivenor
  • He has been mayor three times, now a local charity fundraiser
  • The Barnstaple resident has been a councillor for the town for almost 20 years
  • Ian Roome is now Liberal Democrat Prospective Parliamentary Candidate (PPC) for North Devon

Speaking on his selection, Cllr Ian Roome said:

“I served in the Royal Air Force, and now I’m ready to serve North Devon. Time and again, the Conservative MP has toed the party line at the detriment of her constituents, while the Liberal Democrats and I have been fighting for local people for decades.

“It’s time we replaced Westminster’s voice in North Devon with a true community champion who will stand up for local people. There’s a long way to go, but I’m ready to listen, lead the Lib Dem fight back, and win back North Devon for local people.”

A North Devon Liberal Democrats spokesperson commented:

“This is great news for North Devon. After over seven years of the Conservatives in North Devon, there is finally hope.

"Many people will know Ian Roome as a tireless campaigner - for health, for housing, for education, for climate change, for farming, and more besides. Most of all, he is a campaigner for North Devon, and it’s about time this part of the country had a voice like that back in parliament."

“We look forward to working with Ian to win back this seat from the Conservatives, getting back to delivering for local people, and creating a better life for everyone in North Devon."

The news of Mr Roome’s selection follows the news that the Conservatives are set to lose North Devon seat to the Lib Dems in the next election, with YouGov study predicting the Conservative vote share to drop by 16 points in the region.
