The motion put to full North Devon District Council to save Appledore Shipyard and Royal Marine Base (RMB) Chivenor, by Lib Dem Group Leader, Cllr David Worden, was passed unanimously on Thursday, November 21st.
Cllr Worden says, “I am glad that politicians from across the political divide, were able to unite to support my call to save Appledore Shipyard and RMB Chivenor. Both are vital sources of employment in Northern Devon and the closure of both would be a hammer blow to the area”.
In a coordinated effort, at Parliamentary level, to push the importance of retaining RMB Chivenor, Kirsten Johnson, Lib Dem Prospective Parliamentary Candidate (PPC) for North Devon has written to the Secretary of State for Defence, Rt Hon Gavin Williamson CBE MP. Kirsten says
“I grew up in a military family and have first-hand experience of the sacrifices made by those who serve our country. This particular base is vital not only for national security but for our local economy. Government OWNS the land at Chivenor but LEASES land in other areas of the country. There is strategic military value in keeping this location and I support NDC’s call to enhance RMB Chivenor by bringing 45 Commando and 40 Commando”.
Kirsten also asked the Secretary of State to consider using Appledore Shipyard to build boats for our services, enhancing the work being done at 11 Amphibious Trials and Training Squadron at RMB Chivenor in research and development.
Since being selected as Lib Dem PPC in North Devon, Kirsten has been working with senior Liberal Democrats to secure RMB Chivenor’s future in North Devon.
