Local Lib Dems have found out that the County Council has plans to charge people for using the old Park and Ride at Park School.
When it opened just a few years ago, the Park and Ride was part of a transport plan for Barnstaple that promoted cycling, walking and public transport. Under the Tory county and district councils:
-
The bus service was stopped ;
-
The tarmac surface is falling apart;
-
The cycle lockers have fallen into disuse.
Local campaigner, Pete Leaver, says “It is no surprise to hear that the County Council has plans to start charging drivers to use the car park and to restrict parking on Ladies Mile. This will lead to more traffic on crowded residential streets and congestion in town”.
Local Lib Dems are calling for some joined up thinking on traffic. We need a plan that encourages walking, cycling and bus use. A plan that doesn’t penalise drivers or clog up already crowded local streets“
