Newport Crossing Petition

Graphic showing a wallet in someones pocket and a school crossing patrol sign.As all parents and care givers of children at Newport Community School will know, the lollipop lady Helen left her job at the end of the last half term.  This follows Devon County Council stopping payment of travel expenses that had just about made the job financially viable for Helen.  The Headteacher had written to you all about the School Crossing Patrol, letting you know that the provision of this service is the responsibility of the local authority – in this case Devon County Council – and that efforts are being made to recruit a new member of staff.

At the Annual Meeting of Devon County Council in May 2018, Conservative, Labour and Independent councillors voted to increase their annual allowances by 15%.  This will cost around £100,000.  There is no money in this year’s budget for to pay for this, so funds will have to be found from reserves or under-spends elsewhere.  Liberal Democrat councillors voted against implementation of the increase until after the next County Council elections in 2021.

We call on Devon County Council to prioritise getting a replacement School Crossing Patrol service in place for Newport School over any arrangements that need to be made to pay increased allowances to Councillors.
