On Monday 17th August, Barnstaple was hit by a massive storm that flooded much of the town, with water to a depth of almost a metre in places.
One of the places affected was the Lib Dem offices in Cross St. Although the offices are on the first floor of this lovely Georgian style building, sadly the gutters could not cope with the sheer volume of water and there has been substantial water damage.
As the Management Committee takes stock, assesses the damage, and plans next steps to make the rooms functional again, we are conscious of the affection and memories many of our longer-standing members will have for the offices at Cross Street
Having relocated the bulk of our equipment to the back of the building, which is thankfully unaffected, our first step is to allow the rooms to dry out over the next few days. Whilst this is happening, we will be arranging for a large skip so we can dispose of all the damaged and irreparable contents, safely.
Whilst there’s lots to do, with help from as many folks as possible, we are confident we will not only get our offices back up and running in time for next year’s DCC election activities, but this also gives us a chance to make the place look a bit smarter, and finally have a good old clear out.
And we know many of our older or less mobile members might like to come and help but are unable to at this time for a variety of reasons. Whilst we greatly appreciate any practical help we can get, if anyone wishes to make a donation for Cross Street renovation and repairs instead, any and all contributions would be most welcome!
We are so grateful to have had the support from so many of you, for so long, here in North Devon. Our offices are our home of much heritage, many fond memories and years of tireless work for our community. We'll be working hard together to get it back to a building that is fit to help us fight for everyone in North Devon who needs support in any aspect of their life. If you'd like to join us in that effort, please contact us.
Sadly, we will also need to find funds to clean up as well as replace equipment, stationery, etc. Insurance will help, but inevitably not cover all the costs. So, if you are able, please make a donation to help us recover from this unexpected disaster.
