“Being an ex-servicemen based at RAF Chivenor, it was a great pleasure to propose to the full council that the Commando Logistic Regiment, Royal Marines be granted the Honorary Freedom of the Town.

“This is the highest honour that the town council can bestow on an organisation and I’m delighted that the town council recognises the contribution that the serving personnel and families make to our community.

“I’m sure that this relationship between the Commando Logistic Regiment, Barnstaple Town Council and its community will continue to foster good relations for the future.”

The Commando Logistic Regiment is home to nearly 800 personnel across all three military services. It includes Royal Marines, Mechanical Engineers, Medics and Logisticians.

Cllr Roome, together with other Liberal Democrat councillors on Barnstaple Town Council and North Devon Council,  is actively lobbying the government to make sure that the MOD retain an active base here in North Devon.

Cllr Roome said

”In my view it makes perfect sense to retain the Commando Logistic Regiment here in North Devon, with its location giving good access to defence training capabilities and infrastructure. The base remains absolutely vital to the economy of North Devon and adds to the diversity of our community.”
