Serious concerns have been raised about Conservative plans for an £8,000 payment for residential care after figures released by the Liberal Democrats have revealed that 3.5m pensioner households (66%) do not have assets of £8,000 excluding their homes.

North Devon MP, Nick Harvey, has slammed Devon County Council's decision to sell off Devon's care homes individually as a "panic measure and very short-sighted," claiming the lack of accountability could put the welfare of our most vulnerable residents at risk, as well as putting the future of many of the homes at severe risk.

A large project to replace crumbling housing in North Devon is threatened by the unwillingness of Conservatives at County Hall to back the scheme. Nick says, "This is particularly disappointing as the residents of the properties concerned have been stuck in limbo waiting for this much needed rebuild for some considerable time. The worry is that all North Devon Homes' hard work to get this project off the ground will become unravelled."

Nick Harvey, MP for North Devon, is pleased to be supporting the Raise the Roof Campaign, launched by flat and house-share website Spareroom.co.uk. The campaign, also supported by Shelter and the National Landlords Association, is calling for improved tax breaks for householders who rent out spare rooms under the Government's Rent a Room Scheme.
